Prep - Day 1 Thanksgiving Hike 2010

Preparation

Preparing for our second trip to the A.T. was a little easier than the first since we were now "trail pros". We were able to use a lot of our left overs from the first round. And we all knew what we liked and didn't like to eat on the trail. As it turns out, the spaghetti was in great demand and ended up being rationed when Robbie came late to the food distribution meeting.

We would not be hiking with our oldest son, Andrew, this time. New to our A.T. hiking trip this time was "The Outlaw" (Mary Jane's mother), Brooke (our tween), Scout (our youngest) and our sweet dog Major. We also would be meeting up with our close friend Johnny "Eagle Scout" Steinhauer, his two sons and a boy scout from his troop.

Our starting point is Woody Gap where we stayed not too far from the cars so we could have our official "shake down" night. We tried to convince the Outlaw that her George Washington hat was too heavy and must be left, but she insisted we had stripped her of too many luxuries as it was and the hat was going.

Our first lesson was to learn to set up your own hammock. Robbie felt it necessary to personally test the comfort of each hammock. The Outlaw passed the lashing test with flying colors, however we overlooked the difficulty of entering a hammock. It took her 45 minutes and we laughed and laughed. We think the next night we may want to start the hammock entry lesson while the sun is still up.

Johnny Eagle showed us all how to really "ROUGH IT" when he pulled out the tarp he would be wrapped in every night and set up camp under the ledge of a rock.

Once camp was set up, we all relaxed and ate our dinners by the warm campfire. Robbie and Johnny drove a few days hike up the road and left a car. We continued this the entire hike so we had transportation at the end of our week.

Day 2

First Morning On The Trail

Major smiles to show he had a good night sleep and was very excited to start his hike.

We never got the Outlaw to relinquish her George Washington Hat during the shake down.

Everyone is packed up and ready to hike the miles ahead.
